Visoth’s Story

Visoth’s life began in the streets of Cambodia, where survival was the only thing that mattered. At just 25 years old, he has already lived a lifetime of struggles. His name, which means “holy,” was something that seemed so distant to him as a child, caught in a world of pain and hardship.

Growing up, Visoth’s father was a beggar, and his mother spent her days picking through trash and collecting recyclables. Life was hard, and love was not something Visoth knew. Instead, he learned how to survive—often from the streets, where friends introduced him to drugs, starting with glue, cigarettes, and alcohol at just 9 years old. The numbness they provided seemed like the only escape from the harsh reality he faced at home. But as he sank deeper into addiction, Visoth felt even more lost.

One day, a teacher who saw the pain in his eyes reached out and brought him to Teen Challenge. That moment was the beginning of a radical transformation. For the first time in his life, Visoth encountered the love of Jesus, a love that was foreign to him—something he had never experienced before. It was in Teen Challenge that Visoth discovered that true love isn’t about survival, it’s about healing and restoration.

During his 9 years at Teen Challenge, Visoth didn’t just overcome addiction—he learned what it meant to be loved by God and to love others. His journey wasn’t just about getting clean; it was about finding his true purpose in life. He was mentored by teachers and case workers who helped him not just with his physical and emotional struggles, but also with his spiritual growth. Through their support, Visoth realized that the emptiness he had been trying to fill with drugs was meant to be filled with the love and grace of God.

Now, as a teacher at Teen Challenge, Visoth pours out the love he never knew he had. He understands what it feels like to be lost, to feel abandoned, and to long for a purpose. He is passionate about showing love to the students he now mentors—love that once felt so foreign to him. Through Jesus, he has learned to give and receive love, and that’s exactly what he does every day as he walks alongside others in their journey of healing.

Visoth’s story is a testament to the transformative power of God’s love and the life-changing work that Teen Challenge does. It’s a reminder that no matter where we come from, no matter the struggles we face, God’s love can find us, heal us, and equip us to share that love with others. For Visoth, his name, “holy,” has become a reality—he has been made holy through Christ and now, he helps others find their way to that same love.
